The week ending 25th May 2019, had Jacob Kiplimo win the 10km Great Manchester Run in UK as the major highlight plus Winnie Nanyondo broke the Uganda National 1500m Women's record after running 4:01.39 to finish third at the Shanghai Diamond League in China. The wins come at the most opportune time for ugandan athletes as IAAF granted Uganda world ranking status to two of its national track and filed championships. The Annual Akii Bua Memorial Championships and the National Athletics Championships get the status of ranked invitational meets starting 1st June 2019.

The January-March 2019 quarterly edition gives a detailed account of the latest sports news and development projects in Uganda. Uganda is already reaping the benefits of government's augmented funding of Ugx.17.4 Billion to the sports sector, with outstanding performances registered in different sports disciplines. Successful accomplishments at the XXI Commonwealth Games in Australia, the Uganda Cranes two times qualifications for AFCON, the She Cranes qualification to the Netball World Cup and now the exceptional performance of Uganda at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships.

National Council of Sports (NCS) Council and Management, headed by the state minister of sports, Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi undertook a tour of eastern Uganda that included inspection of the National High Altitude Training Centre at Teryet in Kapchorwa.

The delegation inspected the works in progress at the facility with the running track field and the hostel building nearing completion.

Hon. Bakkabulindi commended the construction team for the progress attained and noted that the sports facility shall go a long way in facilitating sports training in the country.

David Emong has received the Shs30m reward promised to him by National Council of Sports (NCS) upon his Gold at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London.

NCS delivered Shs30m, paid in two Bank of Baroda cheques with each bearing Shs15m, as an earlier promised reward for his success two years ago. The reward was handed to him by Hon. Charles Bakakabulindi, the state minister for sports, during NCS’ four-day team building retreat in eastern Uganda.

Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) want to fast track the inauguration of ‘Tour de Nile’, a race that would cover the countries snaked by River Nile, the world’s longest river whose source is in Uganda.

Mr Sam Muwonge, the UCA chairman, has told the association’s general assembly that he already held a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni in April, 2018 to gain his support for the event that would go a long way in promoting Uganda.

With the Tokyo2020 Olympics fast-approaching, Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has passed a Shs2.8bn budget for 2019 to enable the country prepare sufficiently for the challenges of the Far East.

During the body’s general assembly, the UAF executive led by president Dominic Otuchet informed delegates of the events for 2019, whose proper execution with aid Uganda’s medal bids at the quadrennial Games in Japan.

“We have the All Africa Games and the World Athletics Championships this year which are very important in the lead up to the Olympics,” Otuchet told the assembly.

The National Council of Sports (NCS) has handed out certificates to three sports associations, bringing the total number of affiliated federations to 48.

Mr David Katende, the NCS assistant general secretary (technical), handed out the certificates to leaders of American Football, Climbing Sport and Kabaddi.

He implored them to work towards spread the three disciplines to places far and wide across Uganda.

Dr Ogwel commends Commonwealth Half Marathon team, promises more support

National Council of Sports (NCS) is committed to get more athletes on to the presidential monthly stipend and ensure sufficient preparation for the 2010 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

This assertion was made by NCS acting general secretary Dr Patrick Bernard Ogwel as he welcomed back the Commonwealth Half Marathon team that returned from in Cardiff, Wales having dominated the inaugural edition.

Rugby Cranes are relishing the challenge that awaits them as they seek to win the Africa Rugby 7s title for a third successive title in Tunisia this weekend.

The team, led by skipper Michael Wokorach was flagged off by National Council of Sports (NCS) board member Hajj Zubair Galiwango at Monday.

The 12-man team leaves the country on Tuesday night at 11pm and will be favourites to win the continental crown.

“Of course it now gets harder to win a title. The first time is easy but now it’s not,” Wokorach told the media.
