After a period of seven months of suspended sports activity in Uganda, the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on 20th September 2020, in his Nation's address on COVID-19 eased down on the lockdown restrictions and allowed for the resumption of sports in Uganda.

The President lifted restrictions on outdoor sports activities and maintained the ban on indoor activities. Equally testing of players/athletes was made mandatory, with testing to take place 72 hours before the sports activity/game with a repeat test after 14 days.

On 20th September 2020, the President of Uganda, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in his Nation's address on COVID-19 eased down on the lockdown restrictions and allowed for the resumption of sport in Uganda. Accordingly, National Council of Sports shall provide guidance to National Sports Associations/Federations on the same to ensure safety of athletes during sports events/activities.

Ugandan duo of Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo will lead Team Uganda to the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships on 17th October 2020 in Gdynia, Poland.

World Champion Joshua Cheptegei is the new world 5000m record holder at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Monaco 12:35.36 and is targeting another triumph in the 10,000m event on 7 October before heading to Poland.

It’s coming to Seven months since the suspension of sports activities in Uganda due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.

However despite the limitations, Uganda's sports has continued to thrive; and the government of Uganda has deliberately facilitated key international sports engagements to continue to allow Sportpersons to excel and bring glory to the country.

The 2020 Diamond League in Monaco registered one World Record courtesy of Uganda’s 23 year old Joshua Cheptegei in a remarkable World Record time of 12:35.36 in the 5000m Men’s event last Friday bringing an end to the 16 year old record by Kenenisa Bekele.

’The historic 5000m World Record from the great legend Bekele is broken. I am forever honored to say that he forever remains my role model and idol, respect to you champ.’ Joshua exclaimed. Joshua also holds 15Km at 41:05 and 5Km at 12:51 World Records.

Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei is the 10KM and 15KM World Record Holder and today at the Wanda Diamond League in Monaco, the two times World Champion will attempt to break the 5000m World Record that was set 16 years ago by Kenenisa Bekele at 12:37.35.

Today, Tuesday May 12th 2020, the National Council of Sports (NCS) held its first interactive online meeting with its member associations and federations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting chaired by NCS chairman Dr. Don Rukare was addressed by the State Minister for Sports Hon. Hamson Denis Obua and the General Secretary Dr. Benard Patrick Ogwel. Also, council members attended

Associations’ representatives were given an opportunity to raise their concerns, suggestions and questions, most of which got satisfying responses from the General Secretary.
