NCS GS Dr Ogwel Outlines African Sports Strategy At Djibouti Meet

Uganda has been represented at the African Union conference on sustainable sports development by the National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel.
The two-day African Union Commission workshop on the popularisation of the AU political framework for sports development, has been held in Djibouti in the horn of Africa, and has been attended by Directors of Sports from the 24 countries in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Development Region 4.
The workshop has also aimed at strengthening cooperation among AU member states.
Dr Ogwel, the AUSC Advisory Chair, outlined the council's strategic plan for the period 2024-2028, saying that it seeks to reinforce sports governance and promote sport as a driver of development and social cohesion across the continent.
His words rang true back home, where Uganda has just recently successfully co-hosted a continental flagship football spectacle - the CHAN tournament - with regional neighbours Kenya and Tanzania. The East African nation has also embarked on an ambitious program of infrastructure development to ensure that, along with boosting domestic talent identification and development, it can host other major sporting events to bring the rest of continent through it's borders.
The gathering, opened by Djibouti's Secretary of State for Sports Hassan Mohamed Kamil, was appropriately described by Sports Secretary-General Khadija Ibrahim Idriss as a very important milestone for Africa's sports sector.
