Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) want to fast track the inauguration of ‘Tour de Nile’, a race that would cover the countries snaked by River Nile, the world’s longest river whose source is in Uganda.

Mr Sam Muwonge, the UCA chairman, has told the association’s general assembly that he already held a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni in April, 2018 to gain his support for the event that would go a long way in promoting Uganda.

“In 2018, we were able to hold all our activities. My commitment now is to have the ‘Tour de Nile’ held as soon as possible,” Muwonge told excited delegates.

Cycling, picked on by neighbours, under ‘Tour de Rwanda’, is proven to promote tourism and sponsorship as companies clamour to appear on riders’ uniforms.

The assembly was attended by Mr David Katende, the National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant general secretary (technical), and Mr Ivan Mugowa, the senior administrative secretary (technical).

Mr Katende reiterated government’s commitment towards UCA and all other federations whil Mr Mugowa reminded them of the need to always seek clearance from NCS before travelling outside the country.

Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president William Blick was also among the guests as UCA inducted a new member from Lira to bring the number of cycling clubs to 27.

The association is also in talks with Buganda Kingdom to start holding an annual Royal cycling race.
