GOVERNMENT ‘REGRETS’ CANCELLATION OF FOOTBALL EVENT AT EAC GAMES

A late cancellation of the football tournament- both men and woman- has left Uganda extremely disappointed for not competing in the discipline at the ongoing 1st East Africa Community Games in Bujumbura, Burundi.

Hit by logistical delays, teams were informed on Saturday that the football competition would not happen due to the failure of some teams to get clearance from international bodies FIFA and CAF.

“Its regrettable that we cannot participate here despite the willingness to come here.” Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel, the National Council of Sports Ag. General Secretary, told the dejected teams before they left Bujumbura for the return journey to Kampala.

“We won’t play because of the failure of the hosts to do their work,” he added. “ As government, we shall fully support football to take part in all tournaments at regional and international level.” Dr. Ogwel concluded.

Not surprising, only Uganda, who brought the women’s side, the Crested Cranes, and the Under20, The Hippos, wrote to FIFA and CAF to seek permission as required in the rules.

Burundi, Kenya and Tanzania did not, for fear of being sanctioned, Uganda decided to pull both teams out the Games that have been hampered by organizational delays.
